Two soldiers have been confirmed dead following a fresh attack by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on military locations in New Marte and Kumshe, both in Borno State.

The assault, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, was repelled by troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) with support from the Nigerian Air Force. The incident marks yet another deadly encounter in the region still grappling with the persistent insurgency.

According to a statement by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters Theatre Command OPHK, Reuben Kovangiya, the terrorists attempted to infiltrate the troops’ base in New Marte but were met with fierce resistance.

“The Air Component provided immediate Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and offensive fire support, leading to the decimation of several fleeing terrorists,” the statement said.

A second attack targeting the Forward Operating Base in Kumshe was also foiled through joint efforts by ground and air forces.

“During exploitation of the area, troops discovered lifeless bodies of the terrorists, with traces of blood on their withdrawal routes, indicating additional casualties,” it added.

Kovangiya noted that a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) SUV and several motorcycles used by the insurgents were either recovered or destroyed during the operation.

Despite the tactical victory, the military expressed sorrow over the loss of two soldiers who “paid the ultimate sacrifice” in the line of duty.

The military command praised the troops’ resilience and restated its commitment to restoring peace in the North-East, encouraging continued cooperation from local communities.

The latest attack is a reminder of the security challenges still facing Borno State, as Boko Haram and ISWAP factions continue to test the resolve of Nigerian forces.
