In a strategic move to expand healthcare access in Bauchi State, the North-East Development Commission (NEDC), in partnership with the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), has launched a large-scale medical and surgical outreach targeting over 4,500 beneficiaries.

The intervention, which spans four local government areas—Bauchi, Ganjuwa, Warji, and Katagum—is providing outpatient consultations and specialized surgeries in fields such as psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, pediatric surgery, and neurosurgery.

Speaking on Tuesday during the launch event in Bauchi, Ali Ameer Muhammad, Assistant Manager of the NEDC Health Unit, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to supporting underserved communities across the North-East.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to improving lives through strategic healthcare interventions,” Muhammad said, noting the urgent need for such projects in the region.

Dr. Danboza Adamu, President of the ARD at ATBUTH, described the outreach as a lifeline for many who have silently endured health conditions due to lack of access to affordable medical care.

“We reached out to several organizations for support, and the NEDC was the first to respond positively,” he said, highlighting the value of the partnership in bridging critical gaps in the healthcare system.

Already, dozens of patients have received life-changing surgeries, while hundreds more are benefiting from free consultations and treatments. Dr. Danboza painted a grim picture of the healthcare situation in the region, calling it a “state of emergency,” and reaffirmed ARD’s commitment to supporting similar initiatives in the future.

AHR correspondent reports that the outreach represents a beacon of hope for thousands across Bauchi State, reflecting the power of collaboration in addressing deep-seated healthcare challenges in Nigeria’s North-East.
