Pope Selection in Papal Conclave: No Candidates, No Campaigning – Cardinal David

Cardinal Virgilio Pablo David said there are no candidates in the conclave that will select the next pope, urging people not to treat it like a political election.

In a report on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website, David made the clarification before going to the Vatican for the funeral of Pope Francis, who died Monday (April 21).

“You won’t be able to say, ‘These are the ones who can be pope,’” said the prelate who will be one of 135 cardinals who will select among themselves the next pope.

“Our only obligation is to get to know each other. So we must do our homework. I’m already doing mine,” he added.

The prelate reminded Filipinos that the selection for the next is not the same as the elections in the Philippines.

“Don’t project our concept of elections,” appealed David.

David is one of three Filipino cardinals who will be participating in the conclave.

The other two are Cardinals Luis Antonio Tagle and Jose Advincula. (Additional Agency Report)
