The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed 1.6 million kilograms of assorted illicit drugs—its largest single destruction of narcotics in history.
According to a statement released on Saturday by NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the operation took place at a remote location in Ipara, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. The destroyed drugs were seized across NDLEA’s Zone 9 and Zone 11, including Lagos Strategic Command, Ogun, Oyo, MMIA Strategic Command, and border commands.
The substances included 123kg of cocaine, 46.8kg of heroin, over 1.4 million kilograms of cannabis, 148,000kg of codeine syrup, 3,244kg of tramadol, 1,544kg of skuchies, and 111kg of methamphetamine.
NDLEA Chairman, Buba Marwa (Rtd), represented by Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, Director of Assets and Financial Investigation, said the destruction was both symbolic and scientific, following forensic analysis and court approval. “We are sending a clear message—there is no room for drug traffickers in Nigeria,” he said.
Marwa noted that the agency secured over 10,500 convictions in the last four years and thanked state governors, international agencies, and financial institutions for supporting drug control efforts. Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by his security adviser, AIG Olusola Subair (rtd), praised the NDLEA’s work, calling for more investment in prevention, rehabilitation, and youth empowerment.
