The Delta State College of Nursing Sciences has issued a disciplinary query to Osato Edobor, a student nurse, for allegedly recording and sharing an “unauthorised” video during the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Delta State.

The letter, dated March 27, 2025, and signed by the institution’s provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, accused Edobor of engaging in a “malicious act” by singing and posting an “unofficial response” to a song at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba.

“This is a punishable offence as enshrined in the Student Handbook under standardised disciplinary action for some punishable offences No. 8, Page 21,” the letter stated, directing Edobor to submit a written explanation within 24 hours.

The controversy stems from a viral video in which nursing students at the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme appeared to reject the First Lady as their “mother.”

When the event’s Master of Ceremony introduced Oluremi Tinubu with the customary title, the students responded in unison, “Na your mama be this,” meaning “This is your mother,” refusing to acknowledge the designation.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many linking the students’ reaction to the prevailing economic hardship and insecurity in Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Rising inflation, food scarcity, and high living costs have intensified frustration among the youth.

Despite the controversy, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori praised the First Lady’s efforts, highlighting the improvements in the health sector under the Renewed Hope Initiative. He commended her dedication to enhancing the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

Meanwhile, the First Lady also met with traditional rulers at the Traditional Rulers’ Council Chambers, including the Orodje of Okpe and retired Major General Felix Mujak Peruo.

While the disciplinary action against Edobor continues to draw public attention, the incident underscores the growing discontent among Nigerians, particularly young people, over the nation’s economic challenges.
