The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing data quality in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
This was the focus of a high-level meeting held in Abuja, where Statistician-General of the Federation, Yemi Adeniran, led an NBS delegation on a courtesy visit to NMDPRA headquarters.
The NBS announced this on X on Tuesday, with Adeniran emphasizing the importance of collaboration in enhancing economic statistics. He highlighted the need to leverage reliable administrative data from regulatory bodies, stressing that accurate data is vital for effective economic planning. Adeniran also noted that strengthening the partnership with NMDPRA would improve the accuracy of key statistics in the petroleum sector.
Discussions centered on key data points such as crude oil purchases and refinery receipts, processing volumes, installed and utilized refinery capacities, and the output of refined products. Officials from both agencies acknowledged that better data-sharing mechanisms would contribute to more transparent and evidence-based policymaking.
An NMDPRA official, speaking on the agency’s role, noted, “Our regulatory oversight provides a wealth of information on the petroleum sector. By working closely with the NBS, we can ensure that this data is utilized effectively to support national economic assessments.”
