Elder Statesman Edwin Clark: Tributes Pour in as Prominent Nigerians Troop Residence

The Abuja residence of prominent Ijaw leader and former Federal Commissioner of Information, Chief Edwin Clark, has become a hub of activities as dignitaries, political leaders, and well-wishers gather to pay their respects following his passing.

During a condolence visit at Clark’s residence in Asokoro, elder statesman Alhaji Tanko Yakasai described the late nationalist as “a firm, just, and truthful leader who remained committed to Nigeria’s unity throughout his lifetime.”

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Yakasai, 99-year old, lamented, “He was a rare Nigerian, and finding a replacement for him will be difficult.”

PANDEF National Chairman, Ambassador Godknows Igali, recounted Chief Clark’s final words before his passing: “I love Nigeria. Nigeria is my country.” Igali noted that while his loss is deeply felt, it also provides an opportunity to celebrate his remarkable legacy.

Former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, eulogized Clark as “a great leader and father,” describing him as “a moving and breathing library, a custodian of history.”

Mr. Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, emphasised Clark’s lifelong dedication to Nigeria, stating, “He lived and died for Nigeria. He loved Nigeria and consistently preached and fought for better governance based on justice and equity.”

President of the Middle Belt Forum, Pogu Bitrus, urged Nigerians to continue Clark’s fight for restructuring: “His departure should be a wake-up call to all of us. Restructuring continues; nothing has changed.”

Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dennis Otuaro, called Clark “a warrior and a nationalist,” adding, “He was a minority rights crusader who always believed in one Nigeria.”

Clark’s first daughter, Rebecca Clark-Okorodudu, offered a heartfelt tribute: “He was everything you need in a friend, everything you need in a father.”

As Nigeria mourns, the tributes reflect the towering legacy of a man who dedicated his life to unity, justice, and progress.
