The Lagos State Government has cracked down on motorists violating Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes, impounding a whopping 488 vehicles between January and August 2024.
This stern warning was issued through a press release on the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority’s social media platform, cautioning both private and commercial drivers to steer clear of BRT lanes across the state.
According to LASTMA, the 488 vehicles were apprehended and their owners charged to the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution.
The Abule-Egba corridor, which has undergone recent road rehabilitation projects, has been a particular focus of enforcement efforts. With improved road conditions from Abule-Egba to Iyana-Ipaja, officials deem further BRT lane violations unnecessary and unjustifiable.
Key areas affected by the crack-down by the LASTMA operatives are Ikorodu, Maryland, Anthony, Apongbon, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ojuelegba, Oyingbo and some other places.
The Lagos State Government emphasized that cooperation from road users is crucial for maintaining an orderly traffic environment. “Lagos State remains committed to providing state-of-the-art infrastructure for all citizens, but such progress requires the active cooperation of road users,” the statement read.
In addition to BRT lane violations, LASTMA has also addressed other traffic offenses. In July, they reported impounding 9,370 vehicles from January to June 2024 for various traffic infractions. This included 3,034 private vehicles, comprising 1,849 cars, 549 buses, and 636 Sports Utility Vehicles.
