Tinubu to Unveil Agro Processing Zone, Minna Airport in Niger, Monday

President Bola Tinubu, will launch the Agro-processing zone and the Minna Airport in Niger State, on Monday.

Governor Mohammed Bago, who was honored by the Nigeria Union of Journalists as the Grand Patron of the Niger State Council, shared this information during a visit to Minna.

He mentioned that the airport is almost completed, with only clean-up work pending, and emphasized that Niger State is ready to take on a significant role in the North Central region as an aero hub.

He stated that approximately 1,000 hectares of land had been prepared for use.

The Governor also revealed plans for drip irrigation in greenhouses, which are set to be the largest in Africa.

Additionally, Bago disclosed that a special agro-processing zone at the airport where fresh produce would be distributed to various locations within Nigeria and internationally.

“Apart from the initial 1,000 hectares, there is another 1,000 hectares designated for dairy production that will be exported to different states and countries worldwide.

Bago emphasised the potential for Niger State to sell a significant number of cattle both domestically and internationally on a daily basis.

“To avoid transporting cattle, the plan is to use frozen meat in Niger State to create employment and value.

“The goal is to expand the current 2,000 hectares of land near the airport to 10,000 hectares within the free zone. 140 kilometers of water irrigation is being constructed from Shiroro dam to the area.

“International partners are involved in this project, committed to its success. The aim is to bring 80 Megawatts of power to the airport and attract investments to Niger State, offering free energy and incentives for industries to set up in the region.

“The project, though spanning 50 years, will have its first phase completed in a few years, with a plan for Mr. President to commission it. Additionally, there is a request for a 13.5 percent derivation from the Federal government to support the initiative.

“Since gaining independence in 1960, Niger State has not benefited from the hydro dams, leading to displacement of people and damage to farmland due to excess overflow.

However, Niger State is now positioning itself to store this overflow for irrigation during times of need.

NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo, commended the current administration in the state for the significant transformation of the airport, which had previously deteriorated.

He said, “If you visit the airport, you will notice that it can compete with any other airport in Africa, reflecting significant government investment in what should be a Federal airport. However, the state under the leadership of a diligent governor has taken on the responsibility for this extensive development.

“The Governor’s vision of creating an agro-processing zone and a free trade zone within the airport is innovative and promising, aiming to reduce the reliance on oil by focusing on agriculture.

“This initiative could revolutionize the way red meat is consumed, potentially eliminating the need for blood consumption in the process.”
