Nigerian refugees who have been living in Cameroon for over a decade have urged President Tinubu to take swift action that would allow them to return to their home country.
The Nigerian Refugee Council (NRC), representing the refugees, Luka Isaac, issued a letter on Thursday, highlighting the increasing difficulties they are facing, such as exploitation and human trafficking. He added that the group is worried that their situation is getting worse with time.
The NRC said there are over 120,000 Nigerian refugees in Cameroon. Several of them were compelled to leave Borno state and crossed over to Cameroon, in search of safety. Because of the activities of Boko Haram extremists.
The NRC narrated their experience of how they were compelled to escape their ancestral homes.
Upon reaching Cameroon, they received support from local authorities and various UN agencies like the UNHCR and other international groups.
These organizations ensured that their fundamental needs were taken care of during their stay at various camps.
He stated that over time, the essential supplies decreased and we had to start rationing them.
Currently, the supplies have become unpredictable, thus causing serious challenges for the refugees, such as hunger and health issues.
He also mentioned that the UNHCR and Cameroonian authorities anticipate that the Nigerian government will make arrangements to bring the refugees back to their communities in Nigeria.
The group conveyed their belief that the coming of Tinubu as President amidst these difficult times provided a new source of optimism and revitalization for Nigerians.
They urged the government and other entities to offer their support in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Additionally, they underscored the significance of the federal government fulfilling its fundamental responsibility of protecting the lives and properties of its people and offering aid to the refugees.
