WHO initiated AMR Awareness campaign to combat the abuse of antimicrobials and prevent its devastating consequences.
AMR, a phenomenon where bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites cease to respond to antimicrobial agents, has resulted in nearly 5 million human deaths annually from bacterial infections alone, it said.
The WHO, alarmed by this impact and the insufficient investment in research and development for new antimicrobials, has identified AMR as one of the top 10 global public health threats.
The campaign advocates for collaborative efforts across sectors to preserve antimicrobials and safeguard the health of individuals, animals, plants, and the environment. The goal is to mitigate the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death by addressing the rising challenges posed by drug-resistant infections.
The World AMR Awareness Week serves as a platform to raise global awareness and understanding of AMR, promoting best practices among One Health stakeholders.
