In an exclusive interview with Africa Health Report (AHR) on Monday, the Director of Press, FMOH, Patricia Deworitshe, said the officals of the Ministry heard about the incident ‘over the internet’.

This is over 48 hours after the it was first reported in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State. It has reportedly claimed the lives of more than four people.

“I also read about the report on the Internet,” she stated, adding, ”but as we speak, we haven’t heard from Ogun State on this incident. I am not sure if the incident has been officially reported by the state to the Federal Ministry of Health.”

However, the Special Adviser to Ogun State Governor on Health, Dr Tomi Coker, has confirmed the disease outbreak in Ijebu North Local Government area, warning in a statement that residents of the state should take precautions to safeguard themselves from contracting it.

The statement read in part: “There is an outbreak of cholera (Aarun òní gbá méjì) in the Ijebu North Local Government area of Ogun State. Cholera is known to occur during rainy seasons and may also be associated with poor environment and personal hygiene.”
