ABUJA, Nigeria — The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that its diplomatic offices in Abuja and Lagos will close on Monday in observance of the US Labour Day holiday.
In a statement on Sunday, the embassy confirmed that normal consular operations will resume on Tuesday, 2 September 2025.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, in observance of the U.S. Labor Day,” the statement read.
Labour Day, celebrated annually on the first Monday of September in the United States, honours the contributions of American workers and traditionally marks the unofficial end of summer.
While the holiday is not observed in Nigeria, US embassies worldwide typically close in line with American federal holidays. Applicants awaiting visa interviews or other consular services have been advised to plan accordingly.
The closure comes amid heightened demand for US visas in Nigeria, with long processing backlogs continuing to frustrate applicants. However, embassy officials say operations will return to normal immediately after the holiday.
The announcement underscores the embassy’s practice of aligning local operations with the US federal calendar, ensuring consistency across its global network.
