ICRC Says Over 24,000 Nigerians Still Missing Amid Conflict Crisis

YOLA, Nigeria — More than 24,000 Nigerians remain missing nationwide, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) revealed on Saturday during the International Day of the Disappeared.

At a commemoration event in Adamawa State, families gathered to remember loved ones lost to conflict and violence.

According to the ICRC, the majority of cases are concentrated in the northeast.

“Cases of missing persons are particularly rampant in Borno State where insurgency has been most severe. Sixty-seven per cent of the missing cases occurred there,” explained Protection of Family Link Officer at the ICRC, Benson Lee.

The humanitarian group said children are among the most vulnerable victims, with families enduring years of uncertainty. “Families of missing persons need to feel that they are not alone and their loved ones are not forgotten,” Lee added.

While the ICRC continues tracing efforts, officials stressed the scale of the crisis requires stronger state and community action. “This is not only about absence but about the endless wait for closure,” Lee noted.

Globally, the International Day of the Disappeared, marked annually on 30 August, underscores the plight of millions missing due to wars, unrest, and disasters.

The ICRC urged warring parties and governments to act to prevent further disappearances and support grieving families.
