OYO, Nigeria – The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a driver accused of transporting ₦1 million in counterfeit currency.
State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued in Ibadan on Saturday.
He said the suspect was intercepted by the Federal Highway Patrol Team during a routine check near the Guru Maharaj Ji area along the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway at around 8:45 pm on Friday.
“The driver, in a green Sienna with Lagos registration FKJ 443 YG, behaved suspiciously, prompting officers to search the vehicle,” Osifeso explained.
Police recovered ₦1 million in ₦1,000 notes, packaged in a transparent plastic parcel sealed with tape. “The cash carried only three serial numbers: ₦500,000 (235923), ₦300,000 (235922), and ₦200,000 (235921),” he said.
During interrogation, the driver claimed he was acting as a courier, having collected the parcel from an unidentified individual in Ojota, Lagos.
He was reportedly instructed to deliver it to Osogbo, Osun State, without being given a recipient’s name or contact details.
He told police he believed the parcel contained body cream.
“We call on citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement in curbing currency fraud,” he said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
