Nigerian Pharmacists Partner Police to Boost Public Health, Safety

LAGOS, Nigeria – Community pharmacists in Lagos State have forged a strategic partnership with the Nigerian Police Force to strengthen public health and improve community safety.

The initiative, announced by the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), was unveiled during the 2025 Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) Lagos Scientific Week.

In a statement, ACPN Lagos Chairman, Mr. Tolu Ajayi, stressed the dual role pharmacists play as healthcare providers and safety allies. “Together, community pharmacists and the police can create a frontline that fights illegalities, builds trust, and promotes public health and safety,” Ajayi said.

The partnership included advocacy visits to the Assistant Inspector General at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) and the Lagos State Police Command.

It also featured simultaneous health outreaches across 30 police formations in the state, offering free medical screenings, health education, distribution of medicines, product samples, and first aid supplies.

Ajayi emphasised that community pharmacists were deeply committed to rational drug use and could support crime prevention through intelligence sharing on drug abuse and trafficking. “Beyond dispensing medicines, we provide counselling, monitor treatment outcomes, support adherence, and make timely referrals. We also play a vital role in rehabilitating individuals battling drug addiction and promoting disease prevention and wellness,” he added.

The ACPN said the collaboration demonstrates how pharmacists can bridge healthcare delivery and security efforts, contributing to universal health coverage and community resilience in Lagos State.
