ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticised the Edo State House of Assembly over its resolution urging the Congress to allow Bernard Jormah Egwahide complete his tenure as Edo State Council chairperson.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, signed by Acting General Secretary, Benson Upah, the NLC described the assembly’s move as “the height of ignorance and obscene obsequiousness.”
Upah stressed that Odion Olaye remained the duly elected chairperson, backed by three vice chairpersons empowered to act in emergencies. He said Governor Okpehbolo’s removal of Olaye midway through his tenure violated labour laws and amounted to unlawful political interference.
The Congress further faulted the imposition of Egwahide, an auditor, describing him as the “least in rank” and unqualified under the rules of succession. It insisted that the process undermined the independence of trade unions.
“Labour matters are on the Exclusive Legislative List, and neither the governor nor the state assembly has authority to appoint or elect officers for the NLC under the 1999 Constitution,” Upah stated.
He advised the assembly to concentrate on its legislative duties, including securing its independence, rather than “dabbling into jurisdictions over which it has no oversight.”
The NLC declared the resolution null and void, vowing to resist any unlawful interference in its leadership structures.
