KWARA, Nigeria – Staff of the College of Education (Technical), Lafiagi, in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, staged a protest on Wednesday, accusing the government of abandoning the institution after six years without Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) support.
The protesters, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs at the college entrance, lamented that most of the school’s facilities were built through TETFUND but had suffered neglect since 2019.
“There is a clear regression in this college. We thank the government for paying salaries, but in terms of infrastructure, nothing has been done in six years. We are begging for TETFUND to return,” one staff member told reporters during the demonstration.
Another protester warned that continued neglect could lead to the school’s closure, stressing that insecurity in Lafiagi had already made conditions difficult.
Placards read: “Education First, Include Us in TETFUND Now.”
The staff further accused the Kwara State Government of sidelining the college, noting that while universities and polytechnics across the state benefit from TETFUND, Lafiagi has been excluded.
“Go anywhere in Kwara, most tertiary institutions have TETFUND-built projects. Our college has been left behind for six years,” a protester said.
The demonstration highlights the worsening plight of rural educational institutions in Kwara, even as the state government continues to claim progress in the education sector.
