Yobe Rolls Out Flood Preparedness Plan for 467,000 Residents

 YOBE, Nigeria – The Yobe State Government has launched a 2025 Flood Preparedness and Response Plan targeting 467,000 residents in high-risk LGAs.

At a Monday briefing in Damaturu, Executive Secretary of Yobe SEMA,Dr. Goje Mohammed, said the plan demonstrates Governor Mai Mala Buni’s commitment to proactive disaster management.

Recent flash floods in Potiskum and Nangere displaced 1,800 households, but timely interventions—including food aid, shelters, medical support, and embankments—helped stabilise affected communities.

Key elements of the plan include early warning systems using digital dashboards, activation of Local Emergency Committees, 7,500 sandbags for embankment reinforcement, prepositioned food and medical supplies for 20,000 households and flood-awareness soccer event (“Kick Flood”) to raise community vigilance

Partners including NEMA, UNICEF, FAO, WFP, Save the Children, and Red Cross were commended for their support.

Dr. Goje urged communities to stay vigilant, stressing that resilience is a collective responsibility.
