NRC Assures Safety After Abuja–Kaduna Train Derails Near Kubwa

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Tuesday confirmed that all passengers aboard a Kaduna-bound train were safe after it derailed between Kubwa and Asham stations on the Abuja–Kaduna corridor.

In a statement issued in Abuja, NRC Managing Director, Mr Kayode Opeifa, said the train derailed at kilometre 49 around 11:09 a.m., damaging at least four coaches.

Emergency response teams, security personnel, and medical staff were immediately deployed to the site.

“Passengers have been safely evacuated, and arrangements are being made to return them to Abuja,” Mr Opeifa confirmed, adding that an investigation had commenced to establish the cause of the derailment.

Footage aired by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) showed rescue teams assisting passengers, including women and children, off the train.

The NRC assured the public that normal train operations would resume on the Abuja–Kaduna route once safety checks and repairs were completed.
