ABIA, Nigeria – The Abia State Government has announced that 17 newly completed Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) are now fully operational, while 33 more will be functional by October 31, 2025.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting.
He admitted the rollout missed its initial 100-day target due to weather disruptions, contractor lapses, and an expanded scope of work.
Despite the delay, Kanu said the state’s investment is already paying off, citing a rise in PHC bed occupancy rates from 50% in August 2024 to 100% in March 2025.
The upgrade is part of a broader plan to rehabilitate all 948 PHCs in Abia.
Kanu also announced plans to take over Star Papermill from AMCON as part of an industrial revitalisation agenda that will also target Aba Textile Mills and Afrobeverages, aiming to create jobs and expand revenue.
