NiMet Forecasts Heavy Rain, Flood Threats in Jigawa, Kano, Others

KANO, Nigeria – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather advisory forecasting widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country between Monday and Wednesday, with heightened flood risks in parts of the north, central, and southern regions.

According to the agency, Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina will experience thunderstorms with moderate rainfall on Monday morning, extending later in the day to Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba.

“Flash floods are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano States during this period,” NiMet said.

In the central region, Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa are expected to record cloudy mornings with light to moderate rainfall. Plateau State is flagged as particularly vulnerable.

Southern states, including Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, will also see persistent showers.

On Tuesday, much of the north will witness sunny skies with isolated clouds, while thunderstorms will persist in Adamawa, Taraba, and surrounding areas. “Moderate to heavy rainfall remains likely in Ebonyi, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom,” NiMet warned.

The agency urged residents of flood-prone areas to stay vigilant. “We advise communities to prepare emergency responses, avoid driving during heavy downpours, and refrain from taking shelter under trees during storms,” it said.

NiMet further advised households to secure loose objects, unplug electrical appliances during rainfall, and take precautions against strong winds and cooler nighttime temperatures.

“Airline operators are strongly advised to obtain airport-specific forecasts before planning flights to ensure passenger safety,” the agency added.
