Lafarge Unveils EcoCrete, Nigeria’s First Low-Carbon Ready-Mix Concrete

ABUJA, Nigeria – Lafarge Africa Plc has launched EcoCrete, Nigeria’s first low-carbon ready-mix concrete, in a major step towards sustainable construction and reduced carbon emissions.

The cement giant announced that its Abuja Ready-Mix plant has been fully converted to 100 percent EcoCrete production, marking the start of a nationwide rollout.

Speaking at the unveiling, Group Managing Director and CEO, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, said EcoCrete would enable builders and developers to embrace greener solutions without compromising performance.

“The introduction of EcoCrete is another bold step in our mission to help customers make smart choices and support Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy. Just like our ECOPlanet cement, EcoCrete represents a game-changing innovation that combines performance with reduced carbon footprint,” he said.

Highlighting its benefits, Derek Williamson, Lafarge’s Head of Aggregates and Readymix, noted that EcoCrete delivers at least a 20 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions compared with conventional concrete. He added that the product maintains superior strength, durability, and versatility across residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects.

Head of Innovation and New Product Development, Emmanuel Ilaboya, described EcoCrete as a climate-smart innovation.

“EcoCrete is more than just a product; it is a scalable alternative that significantly lowers emissions and addresses the urgent need for sustainable development,” he said.

Industry analysts say the rollout positions Lafarge as a market leader in climate-friendly building materials, while advancing Nigeria’s sustainability goals.
