World Bank Pushes Gombe to Fully Utilise Revitalised Health Centres

GOMBE, Nigeria – The World Bank has urged Gombe State communities to make effective use of 169 revitalised health facilities, warning that investments will be wasted without local commitment to healthcare utilisation.

Speaking during the inauguration of a facility in Akko Local Government Area on Saturday, Task Team Lead for the World Bank’s Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) project, Onoriode Ezire, stressed that upgraded centres could transform maternal and child health if communities fully engaged.

The IMPACT project, executed in partnership with the Gombe State government, has upgraded 103 primary healthcare centres and 66 clinics to “Level 2 Status.” The initiative aims to improve immunisation, maternal care, child health, and malaria control to reduce under-five mortality rates.

Mr. Ezire urged traditional leaders, women, and community stakeholders to take ownership. “The dream that no woman will die while giving birth is achievable if these centres are used effectively,” he said.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, represented by Deputy Governor Manassah Jatau, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to healthcare funding.

He highlighted that the state’s budgetary allocation to health had increased from 3.5% in 2019 to 15% in 2025 in line with the Abuja Declaration.

Stakeholders believe sustained use of the revitalised facilities will ensure resources are not wasted and will strengthen access to quality healthcare across rural communities.
