Polytechnic Lecturers Threaten Strike Over Pay, Allowances, Neglect

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to federal and state governments, warning of a nationwide strike over long-standing grievance.

In a communiqué released after its NEC meeting on Thursday, the union cited unresolved issues including non-payment of peculiar academic allowances, failure to implement a 25–35 percent salary review in many state-owned polytechnics, and continued discrimination against Higher National Diploma (HND) holders.

ASUP also accused several state governments of refusing to implement the national minimum wage, while criticising delays in establishing a dual mandate structure intended to eliminate the lingering HND–degree dichotomy.

The union condemned what it described as militarisation of campuses and undue interference in union activities, blaming authorities for failing to honour past agreements.

“With this ultimatum now in effect, we will have no choice but to withdraw our services nationwide if these issues remain unresolved,” ASUP declared.

Education analysts warn that a prolonged strike could disrupt thousands of academic programmes and further strain Nigeria’s higher education sector.
