ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the launch of a Personal Income Tax Calculator, designed to help Nigerians understand how the new tax reforms affect their earnings compared to the current system.
In a statement released late Thursday night, the President assured citizens that the reforms, which will take effect from January 2026, are aimed at promoting fairness and equity in Nigeria’s revenue system, while protecting vulnerable groups from undue burden.
“A fair tax system must never punish poverty or weigh down the most vulnerable,” Tinubu said. “With the new tax laws, I recently signed, taking effect from January 2026, we have lifted this burden and created a path of equity, fairness, and true redistribution in our economy.”
The newly introduced calculator, Tinubu explained, will enable Nigerians to check their estimated tax under the new system against what they currently pay. According to the President, the tool will provide transparency, showing clearly how low-income earners are protected, how the system ensures progressivity, and how compliance is simplified.
Analysts say the calculator could increase trust and awareness in the tax system, allowing citizens to see practical impacts of the reforms before they take effect. However, they also note that public confidence will depend on how consistently the reforms are implemented and whether Nigerians actually feel the promised relief.
With the tax changes set to begin in 2026, the calculator marks an early step in preparing Nigerians for a system Tinubu says will deliver fairness and redistribution.
