SOKOTO, Nigeria – The Sokoto State Government has announced plans to expand its social protection coverage by enrolling more vulnerable households into the National Social Register, with support from UNICEF, the European Union, and the International Labour Organisation.
The announcement was made during a stakeholders’ consultation on Friday at Dankani Hotel, Sokoto, where officials reviewed strategies to strengthen the register.
The State Coordinator of the Sokoto Operations and Coordinating Unit (SOCU) said the expansion will prioritise poor and at-risk households, ensuring the government delivers targeted interventions more effectively.
He disclosed that about one million households across four pilot states—Sokoto, Benue, Abia, and Oyo—will be enrolled with technical and financial backing from UNICEF, EU, and ILO.
Commending participants’ contributions, the coordinator noted that inclusive dialogue will refine strategies to reach those most in need. He praised the role of international partners in strengthening Sokoto’s social protection system, stressing that their support has been crucial to achieving progress.
“This initiative ensures that no household is left behind. With reliable data and effective implementation, we can deliver interventions that improve livelihoods, reduce poverty, and safeguard the most vulnerable,” he said.
