NELFUND Explains Why Some Student Loan Applications May Face Rejection

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has outlined key reasons why some student loan applications may be rejected, assuring that all eligible applicants will still have access once issues are resolved.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday night, NELFUND clarified that loan rejections can occur at three stages of the application process. At the initial stage, applications may fail due to incomplete or unclear documentation, mismatched names, or incorrect bank details. During the institutional verification stage, applications may be declined if a student’s school has not approved or uploaded their details. At the upkeep stage, rejections may occur if students apply after an academic session has officially closed.

To address such cases, NELFUND urged students to reapply under the next academic session or correct flagged issues. “No eligible applicant will be denied access to the loan scheme, provided applications are submitted accurately and within the relevant academic session,” the agency assured.

NELFUND stressed that aligning upkeep disbursements with individual academic calendars prevents duplication and ensures fair, transparent management across Nigeria’s diverse tertiary institutions.

The Fund also encouraged schools to promptly upload academic schedules to ease disbursement and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigerian students through an inclusive, efficient loan process.
