Global Fund Urges Africa to Strengthen Health Financing, Accountability

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Global Fund has urged African governments to strengthen Public Financial Management (PFM) systems to safeguard progress against infectious diseases.

Speaking at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), the Fund, alongside the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) and Friends of the Global Fund, Japan (FGFJ), stressed the need for stronger accountability in health financing.

“Strong financial management is not only about numbers; it is about lives,” the Global Fund said.

Japan was praised for its longstanding role in global health financing. Experts warned that as donor support declines, African countries must embed health spending into national financial frameworks to ensure sustainability.

“If health is not integrated into core financial systems, it risks becoming an afterthought,” they cautioned.

The discussions are part of a broader push to sustain progress in fighting HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria while strengthening African health systems.
