KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Government has inaugurated a 14-member committee to oversee the establishment of Gaya Polytechnic, in a move aimed at expanding access to quality tertiary education.
Speaking at the inauguration on Thursday, Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, said the initiative aligns with the administration’s pledge to the people of Gaya.
The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Deputy Governor’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, stated that the committee is chaired by the Vice Chancellor of Northwest University, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Dr. Hadi Bala Yahaya, serving as Co-Chairman.
Other members include Prof. Bala Sale D/Tofa, Dr. Muhammad Umar Kibiya, Prof. Auwalu Halliru Arzai, Alhaji Ibrahim Jibrin Fagge, Engr. Yahaya Abubakar Baba, Prof. Abba Garba Gaya, Dr. Garba Alhaji Adamu, Dr. Surajo Isa Gaya, Halilu Aminu, and Engr. Abubakar M. Adamu. Shehu Sani and Dr. Lukuman T. Suraj was appointed Head of Secretariat and Secretary, respectively.
He tasked the committee with ensuring that academic activities commence by the next academic session, stressing that the project reflects government’s commitment to education and socio-economic growth.
Responding, Chairman Prof. Kurawa assured that the committee would deliver, citing the members’ collective expertise.
Their terms of reference include facilitating passage of the Polytechnic Establishment Bill, securing National Board for Technical Education approval, supervising construction, recruiting staff, processing admissions, and engaging stakeholders.
The government said Gaya Polytechnic will mark a milestone in Kano’s educational landscape, opening new opportunities for the host community.
