FG Assures Treated Water for Karu, Orozo, Kurudu by 2026

ABUJA, Nigeria – Residents of Karu, Orozo, and Kurudu in Abuja will gain access to treated water by June 2026, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has assured.

Speaking on Thursday at the inauguration of a major water supply project to serve the three communities and neighbouring areas, Wike said the initiative will end dependence on unsafe boreholes.

“By June 2026, by God’s grace, you will all have access to treated water and no longer rely on unsafe boreholes,” Wike stated.

He disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved a 60 per cent advance payment to the contractor, CGC Nigeria Limited, a decision which cut the project timeline from 18 months to 11 months.

Also speaking, the FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, said water remained fundamental to development. “Water sustains human health, supports agriculture, drives industry, and maintains ecosystems,” she noted, thanking the President for translating the Renewed Hope Agenda into tangible projects for rural communities.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Dauda, described the Karu project as a strategic part of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project, commissioned in June.

According to him, the project involves laying 195 kilometres of pipeline, ranging from 60mm to 600mm in diameter, with essential fittings. He said the initiative would expand potable water access across Karu, Kurudu, Jikwoyi, and other AMAC communities while creating jobs.

Dauda appealed for community cooperation to ensure smooth execution and improve public health outcomes.
