COWLSO Brings Free Medical Care to Makoko, Improving Health Access

LAGOS, Nigeria – The Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) has extended its free medical outreach to residents of Makoko, offering vital health services as part of the 25th anniversary of the National Women’s Conference.

Flagging off the exercise at Yaba Local Council Development Area, the wife of the Lagos State Governor and Chairman of COWLSO, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, said the intervention was conceived to address health inequalities and improve access to life-saving care.

“This outreach is designed as a special gift to our communities, a way of giving back and ensuring that residents across Lagos have access to free, quality, and life-saving healthcare services,” she said.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu noted that the initiative had earlier held in Mushin, benefiting thousands of residents, and would conclude in Epe on September 2 and 3, 2025.

She explained that the Makoko exercise would provide free screenings for hypertension, diabetes, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, eye conditions, cervical and breast cancer, alongside dental checks and health education.

“These services, if accessed in hospitals, cost a lot of money, but COWLSO is offering them free of charge as part of our contribution to improving public health,” she added, stressing the importance of preventive care in detecting illnesses early and reducing long-term treatment costs.

Reinforcing the impact of the programme, the Chairman of Yaba LCDA, Bayo Adefuye, said the outreach could not have come at a better time.

He described good health as the foundation of a prosperous community, praising the theme “Healthy for All: Bridging Gaps, Building a Healthy Future.”

According to him, “It is a timely reminder that access to quality healthcare is a right for all. This programme is designed to restore hope to the community.”
