ASUU Rejects FG’s Loan Offer, Warns of Looming Strike Over Promises

JOS, Nigeria – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) warns that Nigeria risks another nationwide strike as the Federal Government continues to neglect key agreements reached with the union.

Speaking at a press conference in Jos on Thursday, ASUU President Christopher Piwuna said, “Time is running out. Government has destroyed trust, and it is up to them to regain it if a strike is to be averted.”

The union criticised the government for delaying the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, despite receiving the Yayale Ahmed Report in February 2025.

The agreement covers funding, university autonomy, academic freedom, and staff welfare.

ASUU also rejected the government’s proposed Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF), which offers loans to lecturers.

Piwuna described it as a “poison chalice,” insisting that “our members do not lack where to find loans. What we need is for government to sign the agreement and pay withheld salaries.”

The union condemned the proliferation of universities without adequate funding, describing many as political patronage projects. Nigeria currently has 339 universities, but ASUU warns that spreading scarce resources undermines quality and global rankings.

On pensions, ASUU lamented that retired professors receive as little as ₦150,000 monthly, despite decades of service. Rising inflation and poor benefits, it said, have left many in hardship.

ASUU’s National Executive Council will await the outcome of a government meeting on 28 August before deciding its next steps, but warned rallies across campuses could mark the start of nationwide action.
