ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has flagged off Lot 1 of a 198-kilometre water pipeline project aimed at providing potable water to residents of Bwari Area Council and surrounding communities.
Speaking at the project launch on Wednesday, Wike said President Bola Tinubu had fulfilled his pledge to deliver clean pipe-borne water to Abuja communities.
“One thing you must give Mr. President is that when he makes his promises, he always fulfils them. Today, we are in Bwari. Tomorrow, we will be in Karu, taking two area councils together,” Wike said.
The Minister disclosed that 50 per cent of the total contract sum had already been disbursed to Messrs China Geo-Engineering Construction Limited, the contractors handling the project. He stressed that the initiative signals a commitment to extend development beyond the city centre into satellite towns.
“The President immediately approved the release of 50 per cent of the total contract sum to CGC Nigeria Limited,” Wike revealed. “This project will not only supply water but also create no fewer than 1,600 direct jobs.”
Wike added that the project will reduce reliance on boreholes by giving residents direct access to a central water supply.
Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Dauda, said the installed pipelines will serve Bwari township, Ushafa, Jigu, Kuduru, Kuchuku, and other nearby communities, improving lives and health outcomes.
“This is about transforming people’s well-being and ensuring sustainable water access,” Dauda said.
