US Halts Most Zimbabwe Visa Services Amid Government Concerns

HARARE, Zimbabwe — The United States has suspended most visa processing in Zimbabwe, citing unspecified concerns with the government, the US Embassy in Harare confirmed on Wednesday.

“We have paused routine visa services in Harare while we address concerns with the Government of Zimbabwe,” the embassy announced in a statement posted on X.

It clarified that the move is not a travel ban, stressing that already issued visas remain valid.

The suspension, effective since August 7, covers all visa categories except most diplomatic and official visas, according to a notice published on the US State Department’s website.

Zimbabwean authorities have not yet issued a formal response.

The development comes amid heightened US scrutiny of African nations over visa overstays and travel compliance.

According to the US Department of Homeland Security, Zimbabwe recorded a visa overstay rate of 10.57% in 2023, raising concerns in Washington.

Separately, the United States recently imposed new requirements on some African travellers. From this week, applicants from Zambia and Malawi face visa bonds of up to $15,000 for certain visitor visas.

Washington has also temporarily paused visa services in Niger.

While the embassy stopped short of providing specific details, the decision is likely to affect students, tourists, and families seeking travel opportunities to the US.

Analysts say the measure could strain already fragile diplomatic relations between Harare and Washington.

For now, Zimbabweans with valid visas can still travel, but new applications remain suspended indefinitely.
