DELTA, Nigeria – Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has launched a landmark Widows Welfare Scheme, designed to support 10,000 widows with monthly stipends and free healthcare.
Speaking at the official flag-off ceremony in Asaba on Tuesday, Oborevwori said the programme reflects his administration’s commitment to social justice and women’s empowerment.
“Being a widow is not by choice, and it will never be anyone’s choice. Beyond the pain of losing a loved one, widows are left with the burden of survival. That is why this administration is determined to improve their living conditions and give them hope,” the governor said.
Under the initiative, each widow will receive ₦15,000 monthly, starting with a lump sum of ₦45,000 in arrears. Beyond financial aid, the scheme guarantees free medical care, with all beneficiaries enrolled in the Delta State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme.
“This health insurance is even more important than the stipends because it ensures no widow is denied medical care due to lack of funds,” Oborevwori stressed.
Coordinating the programme, the governor’s Executive Assistant on Social Investment, Elder Isioma Okonta, described it as “a milestone in Delta State’s welfare agenda,” noting that it underscores the government’s resolve to protect the vulnerable.
