KANO, Nigeria – The Federal Government has clarified that patients in Nigeria’s Northwest are not excluded from its kidney dialysis subsidy scheme, contrary to circulating claims.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare said the subsidy is already being piloted in 11 federal tertiary hospitals across the country.
“Under the scheme, the cost of a dialysis session has been reduced from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000,” the Deputy Director and Head of Information & Public Relations, Alaba Balogun, said.
He added that the initiative, part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, is designed to ease the financial burden on patients with kidney-related diseases while expanding access to universal health coverage.
“The scheme is currently active at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, University of Jos Teaching Hospital, National Hospital Abuja, Federal Medical Centre Ebute Metta, University College Hospital Ibadan, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa, Federal Teaching Hospital Owerri, and Federal Medical Centre Abakaliki.”
