ABUJA, Nigeria – The World Health Organisation (WHO) has launched a comprehensive mental health package to improve care for people trapped in humanitarian crises, as over 300 million worldwide urgently require support due to conflict, climate shocks and displacement.
The Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Minimum Service Package (MSP), developed with UNICEF, UNHCR, UNFPA and other partners, is designed to guide aid workers in delivering essential mental health services during emergencies.
“In crises, quick decisions and rapid funding allocation are vital,” said Dévora Kestel, Acting Director of WHO’s Department of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health. “The MSP provides evidence-based guidance to ensure psychosocial support reaches those most in need.”
In a statement made public by the organisation on Tuesday, the package contains quick-start manuals, training databases, monitoring tools, and emergency assessment kits. A practical guide also outlines the most urgent mental health interventions required in fragile contexts. WHO confirmed the MSP has already been tested in multiple humanitarian operations.
Funded by the Netherlands and the EU’s humanitarian arm, the initiative has also trained humanitarian roster members in Türkiye, equipping them with skills to deliver rapid mental health responses.
Experts warn that while food, water and shelter dominate relief efforts, untreated psychological trauma can deepen long-term suffering. “Addressing mental health is as essential as providing food or medicine,” said Dr Aisha Suleiman, a public health expert.
With this initiative, WHO and its partners aim to embed mental health into global humanitarian responses, ensuring resilience and recovery extend beyond physical survival.
