The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast warning of heavy rains, thunderstorms, and potential flooding across the country from Monday to Wednesday.
The advisory, released in Abuja on Sunday, covers northern, central, and southern states, with authorities urging residents to brace for possible disruptions to daily life, transport, and agriculture.
In the northern region, thunderstorms are expected on Monday morning over Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States, followed by moderate rainfall later in Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa. NiMet highlighted Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto as high-risk flood zones.
“The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and rains from Monday to Wednesday across the country,” the statement read.
In the central belt, Niger State is forecast to see light showers in the morning, while the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, and Kogi States could face afternoon thunderstorms. Plateau, Nasarawa, and Niger are considered particularly vulnerable to flooding.
The southern states are also expected to experience widespread showers. Cloudy skies and intermittent rains will dominate Monday morning in Ebonyi, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, with heavier rainfall later in Enugu, Edo, Ekiti, Osun, Abia, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom. NiMet flagged Delta, Imo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom as high-risk flood areas.
The agency further cautioned that continuous rainfall may trigger flash floods, urging residents to take safety measures. Recommendations include avoiding driving during heavy downpours, securing outdoor objects, disconnecting appliances during storms, and avoiding shelter under tall trees. Farmers are advised not to apply fertilisers or pesticides immediately before rainfall.
NiMet also urged airlines to seek airport-specific forecasts for safer flight operations and encouraged the public to follow regular updates on its website.
