Hypertension: Nigerian Medical Experts Urge Lifestyle Change

Medical World Nigeria has issued fresh guidance aimed at reducing the growing burden of hypertension, one of the country’s most pressing health challenges.

In advice published on its website on Sunday, the organisation set out a series of practical measures Nigerians can take to lower their risk of developing high blood pressure. These include quitting smoking, cutting down on salt, avoiding trans fats, limiting alcohol consumption, engaging in regular physical activity, and ensuring good quality sleep.

Describing hypertension as “a silent killer”, the guidance stressed that even modest lifestyle adjustments can significantly reduce the likelihood of serious complications such as stroke, heart attack and kidney disease.

The publication comes against a backdrop of rising hypertension cases nationwide, with health experts warning that preventive action is urgently needed if Nigeria is to avert a wider public health crisis.
