The Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State has launched a health insurance scheme to cover all commercial motorcyclists and their passengers within the council.

Speaking at the inauguration in Abeokuta on Wednesday, the Chairman, Afeez Balogun said the initiative mirrors the Ogun State government’s policy of inclusive healthcare for all.

“We kicked off the distribution of all-inclusive health care insurance cards to ‘Okada riders’ to boost the welfare of riders and passengers,” he said, adding that the council had paid the policy premium upfront to ease access for the informal sector.

Balogun emphasised that the programme had been a priority since his assumption of office, particularly to cater to the vulnerable in emergencies.

He urged commuters to always request a health insurance card before patronising any commercial motorcycle. “This is part of the governor’s commitment to the people, and all we have done is replicate it at the grassroots level,” he stated.

The scheme covers treatments for conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, malaria, and surgeries, as well as emergency admission for accident victims at the nearest healthcare centre.

Commending the initiative, the Seriki Hausa in Egbaland, Ibrahim Hassan, noted that it would significantly reduce the burden of caring for accident victims.

He pledged full subscription by his community and encouraged passengers to choose insured riders for their safety.

The Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Health Insurance Agency, Dr Afolabi Dosunmu, highlighted that the policy’s scope ensured timely medical intervention, especially in emergencies.
