The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has called on National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to make full use of their healthcare entitlements to avoid out-of-pocket medical costs.

Speaking at a health awareness lecture for the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream I on Thursday, Corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Boro Town, NHIA representative Mr. Akinfenwa Oyekola emphasised the importance of understanding the scheme’s provisions.

Mr. Akinfenwa advised Corps members to “always carry their NYSC Identity Cards and maintain regular contact with their Local Government Inspectors” to ensure swift access to free medical care.

He highlighted that while the scheme covers most treatments and surgeries, specific procedures like CT scans and MRIs require a 50% co-payment from beneficiaries. Additionally, renal dialysis is supported for up to six sessions, but treatments such as cosmetic surgeries, drug addiction rehabilitation, and injuries sustained during extreme sports are not covered.

Addressing optical care, Mr. Akinfenwa noted that “the NHIA provides a contribution of ₦20,000 towards eye care services,” urging Corps members to take advantage of this benefit. He stressed the importance of proactive engagement with the scheme to ensure financial protection during medical emergencies.
