Tinubu Commissions 100-Bed Mother and Child Hospital in Akwa Ibom

The Federal Government has inaugurated the 100-bed Renewed Hope Mother and Child Specialist Hospital in Oko-Ita, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Built and equipped under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs), the state-of-the-art facility aims to drastically reduce maternal and child mortality and expand access to quality healthcare in rural areas.

Inaugurating the hospital on Tuesday, Governor Umo Eno—represented by Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi—praised the initiative, noting that it would “significantly complement the state’s efforts in delivering affordable and quality healthcare services.”

He added: “Our President understands that health is wealth. The commissioning of this hospital speaks to the President’s commitment to addressing the healthcare needs of the people, especially those in rural areas, as well as his resolve to implement Sustainable Development Goal-3 on good health and well-being.”

Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, described the project as more than a medical facility, calling it “a reaffirmation of our collective commitment to delivering quality healthcare to the most vulnerable segments of our society; our mothers and children.”

She commended President Tinubu’s leadership and stressed that inclusive development begins with prioritising grassroots health. Citing Nigeria’s 2024 SDGs Progress Report, she highlighted the challenges of the “Triple C” crises—Climate, Conflict, and COVID-19—which have strained health systems globally.

“Together, these crises have strained health systems, disrupted service delivery, displaced vulnerable populations and diverted resources away from essential development priorities,” she said, adding that the hospital’s inauguration signals hope and strategic progress despite these setbacks.

The facility is equipped with operating theatres, recovery rooms, general and private wards, consultation rooms, laboratories, scanning facilities, an ultra-scan machine, vacuum extractor delivery set, and a fully stocked emergency cart.

Designed to deliver respectful, safe, and dignified maternal and child care, it supports Nigeria’s efforts to achieve SDG 3 and other interlinked goals.

Orelope-Adefulire urged the Akwa Ibom State Government, traditional rulers, health professionals, and community leaders to take ownership of the hospital and ensure its sustainability, commending Governor Eno for providing the enabling environment for the project’s success.
