REMASAB Clears Massive Waste Dump in Kwana Shida After AHR Investigation

KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) has moved to clear the massive dumpsite in Kwana Shida, Unguwa-Uku, Tarauni Local Government Area, following public outcry and an investigative report by Africa Health Report (AHR).

On Thursday, heavy machinery, including large tractors and evacuation trucks, was deployed to remove dozens of tons of garbage that had blighted the community for years. The cleanup targeted roadsides, drainage channels, and residential vicinities, although waste evacuation is not yet fully completed.

The intervention is part of Operation Nazafa, the state government’s flagship sanitation drive aimed at improving hygiene and public health in neglected urban and peri-urban communities across Kano State.

Residents expressed relief and urged authorities to permanently relocate the dumpsite to prevent a recurrence. “The place is now cleaner, and we can breathe easier, but the dump must be moved to a safer location,” said Amina Idris, a food vendor operating near the site.

Environmental experts praised the move but stressed the need for sustainable waste management systems and proper urban planning to avoid future health hazards.

The Kano State Ministry of Environment pledged continuous monitoring, collaboration with local councils, and stricter enforcement of sanitation standards to ensure effective waste disposal.
