2025: Thousands of WAEC Results Withheld as States Delay Exam Fee Payments

Thousands of state-sponsored students remain in academic limbo as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) withholds their 2025 WASSCE results over unpaid exam fees by two state governments.

The Head of WAEC’s National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, confirmed on Monday that although 1.9 million candidates sat for the May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), candidates in two unnamed states are unable to access their results due to their state governments’ failure to remit examination fees.

“WAEC will not release the results of state-sponsored candidates until the exam fees are paid. As of Sunday, four states were owing. Two have paid this morning, and their students’ results have been released. We await payment from the remaining two,” Dr. Dangut said during a press briefing in Lagos.

The council revealed that 754,545 candidates across the country secured five credits and above, including in English and Mathematics. However, for students under government sponsorship, access to these life-changing results now hinges on bureaucracy.

The delay raises equity concerns and highlights the fragility of public education funding in parts of Nigeria. As families anxiously await action from their governments, WAEC insists it will not compromise on financial accountability.
