In a renewed push to address the growing out-of-school children crisis, the Kano State Government has deepened its collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), pledging to scale up investments in basic education across the state.
The state Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed this commitment on Friday during a courtesy visit by the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. Aisha Garba, to the Kano State Government House.
The governor, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said his administration is prioritising inclusive and accessible education as a tool for long-term development and social stability.
“Our goal is simple but urgent — to get every child off the street and into the classroom,” Governor Yusuf said. “We are working closely with UBEC and other partners to transform the learning environment and ensure access to quality education for all.”
Yusuf noted that the state is investing in classroom infrastructure, school furniture, and learning materials to create safe and child-friendly schools that will encourage enrolment and retention.
Dr. Aisha Garba, while applauding the Kano State Government’s commitment to revamping basic education, said such political will is crucial in reversing Nigeria’s high number of out-of-school children.
“Kano is taking bold steps. With Governor Yusuf’s leadership and UBEC’s support, we are confident the state will set the pace in addressing the literacy gap,” she said.
The visit signals a strategic move to reinforce inter-governmental cooperation in the education sector, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where socio-economic challenges have exacerbated the out-of-school problem.
