Northern Nigeria’s strategic role in shaping the country’s political and economic direction came under focus at a two-day interactive session on government-citizen engagement hosted by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation (SABMF) at Arewa House, Kaduna, from July 29 to 30, 2025.
In a communiqué issued on July 30, 2025, participants acknowledged the North’s historical influence in driving national unity and electoral outcomes, reiterating the region’s commitment to Nigeria’s progress.
The theme, “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizen Engagement for National Unity”, underscored the need for inclusive governance anchored on holistic national development.
Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties (Office of the Vice President), Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, representing Vice President Kashim Shettima, joined other dignitaries including Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, and Chairman, Northern Governors Forum, Governor Inuwa Yahaya.
Key concerns raised included rising insecurity, food inflation, the growing Almajiri crisis, and the urgent need to scale up rural infrastructure and agriculture.
“We must confront our challenges with courage, not silence. Food security and education cannot be compromised,” said Professor Tijjani Mohammed Bande, in his keynote address.
The summit commended the federal government for progress in infrastructure and economic reforms but urged deeper citizen engagement.
“It is time for the North to negotiate its interests based on national unity, equity, and holistic development,” added Engr. Abubakar Gambo Umar, SABMF DG.
Participants resolved to strengthen dialogue, civil society engagement, and regional collaboration for a more inclusive and secure Nigeria.
