Kano State has entered into a strategic partnership with the United Nations to promote renewable energy, climate action, and sustainable development initiatives.

During a condolence visit to the state, UN Deputy Secretary-General, Hajiya Amina Mohammed, commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for prioritizing people-centered projects aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a statement released on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature DawakinTofa, Mohammed was quoted as saying, “Kano is like a country, and it should be treated as such in terms of development support.”

She praised the governor’s initiatives including the solarization of streets, the establishment of the Kano Centre for Disease Control — the first state-owned facility of its kind in Nigeria — and the expansion of health coverage for the informal sector.

“We welcome the creation of the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy and the repositioned Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, which reflect strong commitment to climate action,” she added.

Governor Yusuf, in response, expressed Kano’s readiness to deepen ties with UN agencies, stating, “Our doors are open for strategic partnerships in health, education, climate change, and sustainable investment.”
