The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) enforcement team has cleared an illegal dumpsite located behind 68, Oduntan Street, Ketu, following growing concerns over environmental hazards in the area.
The operation, which took place on Saturday, was aimed at addressing the health and safety risks posed by the unauthorised waste disposal.
Confirming the clearance, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced via his X handle that the action was part of efforts to safeguard residents.
“Our LAWMA enforcement team is currently conducting clearance operations at an illegal dump site located behind 68, Oduntan Street, Ketu. We are clearing all accumulated waste and will deploy surveillance measures to prevent recurrence,” Wahab posted.
He reminded Lagosians that illegal dumping remains a serious offence under the state’s environmental laws. “Residents are reminded that illegal dumping violates Lagos State environmental laws and endangers public health. To report waste violations in your area, contact @Lawma_gov immediately,” the commissioner added.
Some residents who spoke with Africa Health Report (AHR) expressed relief over the cleanup but urged the government to sustain monitoring.
“We are happy they finally cleared it; the smell was unbearable,” said Mrs. Adejoke Kehinde, a local trader.
Another resident, Mr. James Adekunle, added, “They should make sure people don’t dump waste here again. It’s not enough to clear it once and forget it.”
