FRSC Warns: “Rainy Season Driving Demands Extra Caution”

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged motorists across Nigeria to exercise maximum caution as heavy rains intensify nationwide.

In a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Saturday, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, emphasised that driving in the rain poses significant dangers, including poor visibility and slippery roads.

“Driving in the rain can be risky because one’s visibility is reduced and there are usually hazardous and slippery conditions on the road,” Mohammed said. “Motorists are always urged to take precautions while driving to ensure they reach their destinations safely.”

He advised drivers to ensure their windows and windshields are clean both inside and out before setting off. Additionally, he said vehicle headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and tail lights should be routinely checked to ensure full functionality.

According to the Corps Marshal, the use of towels to improvise for faulty wipers while on transit is unacceptable. “The windshield wipers and blades should be in proper working condition. Drivers must put their lights on during the day and at night whenever rain starts falling,” he stressed.

He further warned motorists to reduce their speed when roads are wet and adopt what he called a “common sense speed limit,” especially as the road surface becomes slippery. Tyres, he noted, must not be worn out to maintain adequate grip.

“Vehicle tyres are amongst the most crucial elements of any vehicle because they are the only part in contact with the road,” Mohammed explained. “That is why tyre condition is very essential.”

To reinforce these safety measures, the Corps Marshal has directed Commanding Officers across the country to prioritise traffic calming, increased public enlightenment, and the enforcement of proper wiper and tyre usage throughout the rainy season.

He added: “Drivers who cannot manage under special weather conditions should stay off the road for their own safety and that of other road users.”
